Fleet Names

Postby Brian56 » Wed Jul 02, 2014 9:44 am

Hi all can anyone help please?

In the early years (and continued into the last century) smacks and then trawlers sailed in the 'Fleeting' fashion. These fleets usually had names, two I have come across are the Gamecock Fleet and the Red Cross Fleet.

Has anyone information on fleet names used from around 1870 to 1910 please? Surely with so many smacks sailing out of Hull around this time there had to be more than just the two yet I can find no information at all. It would also be helpful if along with the name a description of the flag could be included, for instance the Gamecock fleet was a white background with a red cockerell (gamecock) on it.

Many thanks,
Brian.

The Gamecock Fleet ( Great Northern Steam Fishing Co ) Red Cross Fleet ( Hull Steam Fishing & Ice Co ) were the two main fleets from Hull later on around and after 1910 Hellyer Brothers did start the fleeting system.
