HULL SKIPPERS

Postby hulltrawler » Sun Jan 23, 2011 6:36 pm

Thank to Ken Knox I can now provide details of the photograph below. The photograph was taken onboard HMS Sheffield on a visit to Hull circa 1970. HMS Sheffield was lost during the Falklands Conflict with the loss of lives, may we take a moment to remember those who lost their lives aboard HMS Sheffield. After a visit to The Hull Trawler Officers Guild the ( party !!!) then went aboard HMS Sheffield in King George Dock.
Front row from left. Ken Knox. Tommy Sawyers. Nev Beavers. Mick Osborne. Moss Ward. RN Officer
Back row from left. RN Officer. ?. ?. ?. ?. Don Spivee. Colin Barker. Mally Meadows. Freddy Myers. RN Officer
Photograph was taken by Ken Nielsen Secretary of The Hull Trawler Officers Guild. One or two more skippers where still drinking and missed out on the photo.
As soon as we got comfotable in the officer ward room they supplied everyone with a drink but emphasised that one of us take a very large dram of "Pusser's Rum". Many declined but the skipper of the stern trawler "Marbella" accepted, He was well known with a wonderful head of blonde wavy hair which he was very proud of. He was sailing the next day and the RN officers invited him to remain on board after we had all left. Hard fast asleep, in drink, they had the ship's barber dye his blonde locks a very bright blue and then delivered him safely home.
Many Thanks to Ken for this information.
