This site is dedicated to all Hull Trawlers, and the men who sailed in them.

THE PRICE OF FISH

The price of fish is very dear, Two hundred men were lost this year.

Two hundred men in a watery grave, That was the price, the price they gave.

Up in the land of the midnight sun, Where the endless fight is never done.

Tired and weary, drenched and cold, They strive to fill the icy hold.

And many a man's gone over the rail, Lost in the teeth of an Arctic gale.

I only hope my point is clear, The price of fish is VERY dear.

Hull Trawler. The aim of this site is to portray and acknowledge the history and heritage of the Hull Fishing Industry. There are many topics which I will cover from the early sailing smacks of the 19th centuary, to sidewinders and the modern stern trawler. Incorporated into the site there will be a varied subject range, such as the Admiralty armed naval trawlers which served in the Great War and the Second World War, as minesweepers and auxilliary patrol vessels, many of which were mined and sunk. Other conflicts such as the cod war with Iceland will also be covered. Each trawler from firms such as Kingston, Hull Steam Fishing & Ice Co , Hellyer, Pickering & Haldane, Kelsall Brothers, Lord Line, Boyd Line , F & T Ross, Hudson Brothers, Marr will be listed with its relevent history and each trawlerman from skipper to apprentice that is identified will be placed with the appropriate vessel. Where possible I will provide photographs of both vessels and crew. From St Andrews Dock into the Humber and the North Sea and out to the many varied distant water fishing grounds we will journey through the hardships like the great storms, the russian outrage, the boxer fleet and the tremendous losses that befell upon the deep sea fishermen.

although I try to build a true accurate account of events, there are many huge holes that have been left concerning the fishing industry. Due to lost or destroyed records these holes may never be filled. Like many things there are three main era`s to the fishing industry and trawlermen of Hull, the beginning, the middle and unfortunately the end. I am not a historian or a politician and probably by my writing you will note, I am neither a scholar, my aim is to provide the material on this site, that I have gained in my own research and interest, and that kindly provided by others.

The Trawlermen of Hull

It was in the early years of the 1840`s that men and vessels came from Brixham, Ramsgate, Scarborough and many other ports to fish from Hull, my aim is to portray the lives and times of these men, men who pioneered the birth of Hull as a fishing port and over the next 150 years, turned it into the greatest distant water fishing port in the world. Fishermen came from all over the United Kingdom and as the industry progressed, all parts of the world to fish from Hull, these men were born to the sea and had spent their lives living and working with it.

The site will continue to change and grow so please come back often, I will welcome any contributions of information or photo`s ect, which will enable the site to portray a truer more accurate account of the history and families the site is dedicated to.
