Fact File H.M.T STELLA SIRIUS was based in Gibralter and was part of the 7th a/s group. On 25 Sep 1940 she came under bombardment from French enemy aircraft. A bomb hit her fore-deck killing and injuring sheltering cremembers in the fore-peak, a huge fire started and seamen from surrounding vessels attempted to rescue the injured and put out the fire. There was very little headway against the fire and as it threatened the ammunition magazine and depth charges the decision to sink her was taken. After opening the Kingston Valve and splitting the intake pipe to the condenser she quickly flooded and sank, avoiding further damage to vessels nearby. One survivor a young seaman that had been on deck was blown into the sea.( Ref ADM 1/10776) |
