Hull Trawler Missing Jan 1930

After leaving Hull on the 08th Jan 1930 for her first voyage to the White Sea, with coals and food to last 28 - 30 days which was sufficient for this ordinary voyage to the fishing grounds of Skolpen Bank 95 miles NE of Vardoe Norway, the Hull Trawler St Louis H153 was posted as missing. The usual course for the vessels making the trip to the White sea was through the Norwegian Fjords entering at West Fjord then taking a pilot at Lodingen and leaving the North end at Honningsvaag. Although the St Louis did not telegraph that she had entered the West Fjord as was usual practise, the owners were not unduly anxious as it was often the case that trawlers took the outside passage and are not heared off until their return and enter the North Fjords at Honningsvaag on the homeward journey. By Feb 05th having not received a telegraph and the vessel been out three weeks with no word a search was ordered to obtain her position, as it was believed she could be disabled and drifting helplessly somewhere between Scotland and the North Cape of Norway. After representitives of the Hull Mutual Insurance and Protect Co went to London to visit the Admirlty, six fishery reserve patrol boats were instructed to search for the trawler, other trawlers were also asked to search for the missing vessel. By the 08th Feb a further theory was that the vessel was ice bound in the Arcticle circle and having no wireless aboard was unable to communicate her position.   The families of the crewmen had every hope that the vessel would be located. A lifebuoy from the St Louis was found by a Norwegian whaler off Svino Light on the Norwegian coast giving rise to the fact that the trawler had been wrecked and the crew lost. By the 20th Feb the trawler was officially given up as lost. The Fishery patrol vessel Rosemary while searching for the St Louis had travelled further north than any english naval vessel since the middle of the last Centurary working within 100 miles of the permanent  ice barrier, contending with extreme blizzards and severe icing up.

On Mar 9th a service was held in the Fishermans Bethel by Joseph Summers the port missionary with twenty six children and 300 adult relatives of the lost men, in addition there were many from the fishing community that attended and a overflow service had to be held in the school room conducted by Mr Herbert Dayes with an estimated 600 worshippers in all, some were unable to gain access.
