Fact File

9 Dec 1975 The St Giles was fishing with the fleet off Iceland under the protection of the fishery protection frigate HMS Brighton (Cmdr Neil Kettlewell ). On sighting the Icelandic gunboat Thor, Hms Brighton advised all trawlers to bring up their nets. Commander Kettlewell communicated the following to the Thor "This is Brighton I am opening for you, but you are interfering with lawful fishing on the high seas. Over". Hms Brighton manouvered herself between the Thor and the fishing fleet, were several manouveres were carried out by both vessels and at one time only 20 feet seperated them. The Thor spotting the St Giles, still with her nets down deployed her cutting wire and crossed the stern of the St Giles cutting her warps away. The trawlermen aboard the St Giles were shouting at the Brighton to turn its guns on the gunboat, one man shouting sink it, as the Thor made off  the tug Lloydsman also came to assist but was too late to join the affray.

Last Fishing Trip: 28/06/79 to 23/07/79.
