Fate : 05 12 1942 Petrol explosion Lagos The motor tanker Athelvictor had been escorted to Lagos, and while in harbour had accidently discharged 20,000 gallons of petrol. The trawlers Bengali, Spaniard and Canna which were been refitted at the time were close by. The petrol ignited resulting in the total loss of the 3 trawlers, which all exploded, depth charges and ammunititon adding to the petrol. The trawler Kelt which was also nearby received extensive damage , her bow was blown off the bridge was buckled and the foredeck collapsed. The Kelt lost nearly all her crew of 26 , Sub - Lieutenant Fowler been the sole survivor of the Kelt, although the trawler was refitted.
