08 Jan 1913 The Steam Trawler Socrates of Fleetwood 295 tons Captain Phillip Burman with a crew of 11 struck the rocks in Clanyard Bay Wigtownshire early yesterday morning at around 1.45am during thick fog and drizzling rain. The crew managed to scramble onto a ledge of the rocks and after climbing 150ft cliffs walked to Dunmore. They were subsequently sent home to Fleetwood by the Shipwrecked Mariners Society. With the rising tide the vessel slipped into deep water and was submerged she was owned by J Marr Fleetwood. Jan 1913 Vessel Surveyed by Liverpool and Glasgow Salvage Association's Barge LADY KATE (135 grt/1881). Little damage was found to the vessel but an offer to refloat her was declined by the Hull Steam Trawlers Mutual Insurance Co. and the Vessel was declared a complete total loss on `12th Jan she was subsequently stripped and left in situ.. |
