Fact File

On 23 12 1955 the Prince Charles heading through the Norwegian Fjords under a Norwegian pilot ran aground on rocks on the island of Soeroeya, 60 miles west of Hammerfest, at the time there was a severe snow storm and blizzard blowing. After the vessel grounded she then slipped off the rocks onto her port side and half submerged.

Nine of the 21 crewmen were lost along with one of the Norwegian pilots. The mate Alfred Hopper and Neal Fennell tried to swim ashore with a line, the mate was beaten back and Neal Fennell was swept away. Some of the crew did manage to make shore and where rescued from the shore, by the Norwegian ship INGOEY after two hours. For their bravery and gallant action both Hopper and Fennell where awarded the silver medal for gallantry by the RHS. Neil Fennell's award been made posthumously.

The relatives of the lost men launched a lawsuit against the Norwegian government, with a claim for about œ225,000. They made allegations of gross negligence on the part of the drowned pilot Trygve Skarstad. Survivors of the trawlers crew insisted that Trygve was drunk when he boarded the trawler at Honningsvaag and one declared that he was drunk on the bridge whilst in charge of the ship just before it struck the rocks. Others said that he appeared to be suffering a bad hangover and had asked for and was given aspirins only ten minutes before the disaster.

The vessel was refloated in August 1956 and towed to Tromso. She was then towed home to Hull where she arrived on the 3rd November 1956.
After a refit she was sold to the Loch Fishing Co Hull and renamed Loch Melfort
