Fact File

Feb 1906 The Hull Trawler Mackenzie made a record catch in value for the sale

28 Dec 1910 After severe weather at Iceland the Mackenzie was driven ashore at night and grounded on rocks, on the south coast of Iceland. The crew waited till dawn to leave the vessel which was been swept by heavy seas and bumping the bottom during the night. At daybreak two Icelander`s signalled the crew and a bladder was floated to the shore through the surf with a line attached.  Using heavier ropes the exhausted crew were drawn to the shore. The vessel been abandoned by the crew as there was no hope of getting her off the rocks and back into deep water. After receiving medical treatment at the cottages of their rescuers the Skipper John Gant and 11 crewmen set off on ponies in the blizzard conditions for the capital Reykjavik. After suffering much hardship and having to rest for two days, after an 8 day journey across Iceland they arrived at Reykjavik Iceland on the 28th Dec for their passage home. Six men came home aboard the Hull Trawler MACFARLANE H997 ( Skipper Nielson ) and 5 men came home on the Grimsby Trawler Cassowary, the mate of the Mackenzie been left behind in Iceland as there was no accomodation for him.
