05 August 1943 the trawlers Red Gauntlet, Marie Hastie, and Lord Melchett belonging to the Harwich Minesweeping Groups were engaged in searching the swept channel off that port, when they were attacked by a pack of E boats, after a swift fire fight the E boats retreated having placed a torpedo into the Red Gauntlet which exploded and sank.
