Convoy PQ17 July 10th 1942 position 70-10 N./41-40 W. (about 65 miles NE of lokanka, USSR. The EL CAPITAN on route to Archangel was attacked by enemy aircraft the EL CAPITAN was sunk the next day, ( there are conflicts on this as some state she was sunk by gunfire from Lord Austin and other scources credit U-255 for the sinking). The Lord Austin picked up the full crew of the El Capitan Consisting of 37 Merchant men, 10 Armed Guard and One Officer, also 19 Survivors of the SS John Witherspoon which had been picked up by the El Capitan after been sunk by German submarine U-255. Lord Austin took the survivors to Archangel arriving about 1730 GCT on July 11, 1942
