Walter Sedgwick previously sailed on the Kingston Peridot and the Cape Cleveland before joining the Kingston Garnet, after having a accident in 1966 he was injured when the otter board caused a injury to his cheek bone. on 15 Feb 1967 he went overboard and his wrist was caught in the net ropes, in most cases a man in this position would have been drowned. The pressure of the ropes cut through the wrist bone and left the wrist hanging by tendons only, a gruesome injury but possibly one which saved his life. After been hauled aboard the vessel he was hospitalized in Norway where his hand was amputated, he later received corrective surgery to shorten the amputation for a prothesis at the old Hull Royal Infirmary. This accident was to see the end of walters days as a trawlerman.

While working aboard the Hull - London Pullman Train a chance meeting by Walters son Adrian with the owners of the vessel Graham Hellyer, Tom Boyd and Basil Parkes. Adrian asked if it was possible for them to find a shore job for his father, of which they duly did and Walter served ashore in the stores until his retirement aged 68 around 1976
