19 06 1940 HMT Moonstone captured the Italian Submarine Galileo Galilei - Moonstone was part of the 4th Anti - Submarine Group based at Malta with H.M.T Amber , H.M.T Beryl, H.M.T Coral and her fellow Hull Trawler H.M.T Jade. Later in 1940 H.M.T Moonstone was transfered to Alexandria to patrol off Aden. On the 19th of June she located a Italian Submarine they had been searching for by asdic contact. On her second run of depth charges she forced the submarine to surface, H.M.T Moonstone then assaulted the submarine head on with gunfire forcing the submarine crew to surrender. The submarine was the GALILEO GALILEI shortly after the destroyer Kandahar arrived to give assistance with prisoners and towing the submarine. H.M.T Moonstone entered Aden followed by its prize and the Kandahar. the submarine was taken into Naval service firstly as the X 2
