WILLIAM DARNOLD - The vessels built for the Admiralty were given the names of the fallen men from the battle of Trafalgar, the WILLIAM DARNOLD was one such named vessel.

HESSONITE

04 10 1924

The Hessonite was on her way home from the North Faroe Fishing Grounds when in thick fog and darkness she ran aground at Birsay Orkney Islands. The Stromness rocket brigade managed to throw a life-line directly over her amidships and one of the crew was about to step into the breeches buoy when the Stromness lifeboat came alongside, and suceeded in getting all hands aboard her and took the crew to Stromness. The scene is in close proximity to where Lord Kitchener was lost when he was aboard the Armed Cruiser Hampshire. Within the last few years there has been four trawlers lost on this stretch of coast within half a mile of each other.

As can be seen by the gathered crowd it was an amazing feat for the Stromness Rocket Brigade to direct the life-line so accurately.
