Fact File

ROBERT BARTON - The vessels built for the Admiralty were given the names of the fallen men from the battle of Trafalgar, the ROBERT BARTON was one such named vessel.

08 June 1930 - TRAWLER HAYBURN WYKE FD99  - TRAWLERS ON SANDBANK : A DOZEN RUN ASHORE AT FLEETWOOD.

Tiger`s Tail, a notorious sandbank in the River Wyre, at Fleetwood, was the scene of the amazing exploits of a dozen of the port`s biggest steam trawlers and at one point six trawlers were ashore on the bank together last night. Thousands of Blackpool holiday-makers who had journeyed to Fleetwood lined the quayside, and witnessed thrill after thrill. In seafaring circles it is averred that nothing like it has ever occured before. The trawlers 23 in all, were comming home from the fishing grounds. The Nellie Braddock headed the column, and when approaching the port she grounded on the west side of the channel. It occupied half an hour to get her afloat again and then she steamed towards the dock. When she was but a few hundred yards from the lock pits she encountered Tiger`s Tail. Swaying from side to side, the vessel wriggled for two hours trying to free herself from the clutches of the bank. She refloated but a few seconds after she ran aground again, and entirely blocked the channel. Other vessels were now sailing in and the Erna, in trying to pass the Nellie Braddock also ran agroiund and the two trawlers formed a complete block. The Evalana came next, and she also piled herself up on the sandbank. She was followed by the Belgian trawler Jacqueline the Davara, the Gwenillian, the Marrette, and the Hayburn Wyke, and each vessel was unable to prevent the tide from carrying them on to the sandbank. Other trawlers were involved in the hopeless tangle, and only skillful seamanship prevented what might have been a shipping disaster of great magnitude. One of the trawlers damaged her bows in collision with one of the other vessels.
