31 Oct 1930 Harold Waddington bosun and John Scarborough third hand, had taken the boat to board the nights catch, aboard the carrier Nuthatch H271. The sea was moderately rough but not sufficiently bad to cause a stoppage of the fleet`s boarding operations. The boat was on it`s return journey to the Grosbeak, when what fishermen call an unlucky sea broke over it swamping it completely. Skipper Griffiths had been watching the progress of the boat and he immediately steamed the Grosbeak to the spot hoping to be able to pick up the two men, but the weight of the water which had fallen on the boat had been so great as to drive it and it`s two occupants beneath the surface and sink it. A search was maintained by the Grosbeak and other trawlers for some time but no sign of the men or boat was seen.
