Fact File

The Hull trawlers Gozo and Grenada both having been sold to Milford Haven, were mined while fishing off The Old Head of Kinsale.

13 Mar 1913 : The Hull trawler Poonah rescued the crew of the Bremerhaven Barque, Hermann in the North Sea, in the teeth of the gale a boat was launched from the Poonah to the rescue of the crew of the Hermann, which was rapidly foundering. The mission proved succesful, and the shipwrecked crew landed at Hull. In recognition of the Gallantry of those immediately concerned the German Emperor has forwarded a Gold watch for Skipper F W Parker and sums of money for A Reedpenning and J Kenyon seamen on the steam trawler Poonah, a boat was launched at the same time from the Hull trawler Gozo , but it was overturned, Skipper Charles Deyes of the Gozo has received a letter of thanks from the german Ambassador.

12 Nov 1920 The Trawler Gozo belonging to the Hull Steam Fishing Co, arrived at the Hull Fish Dock, this afternoon, having on board the crew of a Yarmouth herring drifter. The trawler left Hull last evening, and picked up the crew from a boat off the entrance to the Humber. No lives were lost. The rescued crew numbered eight or nine.

16 Jan 1922 TRAWLER ASHORE IN BLIZZARD: Spurn Lifeboat standing by Hull vessel. Spurn Head, Monday at 3.30 this morning, the Spurn motor lifeboat was launched to a vessel which was in distress, to the south of the Humber. The vessel proved to be the steam trawler Gozo of Hull, which had run ashore on the Haile Sand during the blizzard. Anchors were at once run out, and the Lifeboat is standing by. The owners Hull Steam Fishing and Ice Co, stated that the latest report is that the trawler is being rescued from her position. The occurence is one that need occasion no alarm, and happily there is no loss of life or injury.

06 Jan 1936 - Gales off the Pembrokeshire Coast saw several vessels in difficulty , The Feasible 103tons a Lowestoft vessel managed by Mr. J. Breach and fishing from Milford Haven with a crew of 10 Lowestoft men was persumed to have been lost in the gale. She was returning to Milford Haven when at 7.20pm on Sunday while off Dunmore South Ireland, 12 miles from the smalls, she was been battered in the gale and was hit by a very heavy sea aft, the mitzen sail was carried away, the top of the wheelhouse was also carried away with the compass and she also lost her lifeboat, crewman B Halliday of Lowestoft was washed overboard. The crew spent 13 hours bailing out the flooded cabin and engine-room with pumps. Having another compass but not knowing their bearings, the compass was placed on the floor as the skipper steered the vessel the best he could, finishing up NW of Strumble Head. Picking up a morse signal from a coaster the skipper of the Feasible was told the bearing she was steering and was able to adjust the compass by it. About quarter to three on Monday afternoon the Feasible was picked up by the Milford Trawler Gozo, Skpr Chris Masterson and taken in tow to Milford Haven.

BENJAMIN HALLIDAY - 25- FEASIBLE  - LOWESTOFT  ( Surname in several newspapers given as either Benjamin, Edward,or Bernard).

04 Feb 1942 Trawler Gozo Stranded Tranmore Bay, County Waterford.    04 Aug 1942 Eire High Court, application to recover £5,000 for salvage services to the stranded trawler on the 04 Feb. Action filed by Eight local fishermen and the members of the Dunmore East Lifeboat, who claim £5,000 against the owners. Plaintiffs claim if they had not rendered services for 26 hours and towed the vessel off the stranding she would most certainly have been lost. Defence is that the services if any rendered did not entitle plaintiffs to salvage reward, but only to reasonable renumeration for work and labour done. It was stated that the agreed valuation of the trawler and her cargo of fish was £4,500. Another part of the defence was that any services, rendered were performed by plaintiffs in the nature of life saving services.

24 July 1945 TRAWLER SUNK - NO LIVES LOST : The Milford Haven Trawler Gozo (80tons) was sunk off the old head of Kinsale. Co Cork yesterday. At 9.30 am following an explosion believed to have been a mine, which damaged the forward starboard gallows causing the vessel to sink within an hour. Although she was taken in tow by another trawler the Phoebe the Gozo turned over and sank. One member of the crew third hand Albert Mitchell, received slight rib injuries and another Patrick Holder suffered from shock. The crew were landed at Kinsale.
