On the 25th Jan 1910 the Grimsby Trawler Oldham answered the signals of distress from the Gothic which had been hit by a huge wave, the Oldham launched it `s boat with Richard James Hewart and Edward Downs aboard, the boat succeded in rescuing 4 men from the Gothic despite the rough weather and high seas, but their boat sustained considerable damage by been bashed against the Gothic. after making temporary repairs to the boat an attempt was made to drift it to the Gothic by aid of a line but the boat was swamped and sank. Efforts to attach lines to lifebuoys also failed and with darkness fast approaching further efforts were abandoned. After standing by the Gothic all night the Oldham was able at daybreak to get a line aboard the Gothic and the remaining crewmen hauled aboard the Oldham, one crewman died when been hauled aboard the Oldham, the Gothic sank 25 minutes later.
