| Although distress signals had been seen on the 3rd Jan The first indication that anything had occurred to the Edon was when the mate of fellow Hull trawler the St Kilda H355 Earnest Munzer spotted the Endon with her trawl down and all its deck lights lit. On investigating the Edon was found unmanned, there was no sign of the 10 man crew, There was a large gash in the side of the Edon and the lifeboat had been launched, the only signs that something untoward had occured but the vessel had not been in immediate danger of sinking, so the crew dissapearance was a mystery. Skipper William Rutland of the St Kilda decided to take the vessel in tow and head back to Hull, but due to severe weather he abandoned the tow leaving the Eldon adrift, she sank at 3pm on the 4th Jan . The St Kilda did recover the body of the Bosun Vincent Edward Harbord who had been found close to the Edon at 0815 with his lifebelt on. It was also reported that the Hull trawler Stronsay H387 had trawled up the body of Harry Anderson the new deckie- learner, not wanting to carry the body onboard the Stronsay it was returned to the sea. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
