Rescue of the Wilson Liner Runo 05 09 1914

The Hull Trawler Cameo H394 under skipper Frederick William Wollaston rescued many lives from the Wilson Liner Runo which had been mined in a known minefield 20 miles off the east coast when deviating from the given Admiralty Directions on the 05 Sept 1914. The Runo was enroute to Archangel Russia from Hull with a cargo of rubber and almost 300 passengers and crew of which 10 lost their lives, possibly in the explosion, as the vessel remained afloat for some time she was able to summon assistance of which the Hull trawler Cameo was one of the vessels which responded. On 01 Oct 1914 at the Hull Guildhall the Lord Mayor Presented a handsome gold watch and Albert Cross to Skipper Frederick William Wollaston, Master of the Hull Trawler CAMEO in recognition of his gallantry in saving a number of lives from the Wilson Liner RUNO, When it was mined in the north sea last month.
