On 15th Feb 1900 many Hull trawlers like the Butterfly were battling the heavy gales, while trying to free the rudder which was jammed on the Butterfly the two Platten brothers were washed overboard, the Butterfly did manage to arrive in Aberdeen unlike the Hull Trawlers Ensign H249, Cypress H198, Deerhound H81, Falcon H321, Indian Empire H369 and the Bermuda H296 which all foundered.
