Apr 1938 B.O.T. Enquiry found Cause of stranding and loss
of vessel off Foula Island near Shetlands last April was the wrongful
acts and default of the skipper Arthur Christy. The enquiry found : Navigation
without seaman like care. Cert of competency suspended for 12 months with
recommendation he not be allowed cert of lower grade during suspension
Spare hand John Herrington had been left at the wheel with no lookout
as the bosun and several other crewmen were on deck repairing the nets,
the skipper made several visits to the bridge but had not taken a depth
sounding which could have avoided the grounding.
